Thirty young performers, aged 12 to 18, of the Worcester Children’s Chorus (WCC) will be performing in New York City’s Carnegie Hall for a concert led by world-renowned composer and conductor, Francisco Nuñez, on June 23-27, 2017.
This exciting opportunity to showcase the hard work and raw talent of these young performers in such a historic venue is not a first for the WCC. Back in January 2015, the group first performed at Carnegie Hall with a work titled “The Peacemakers,” alongside adult and children’s choirs from across the country and beyond. “We have been invited back this June to participate in the concert, as the New York concert managers were very happy with the work of the WCC singers,” said Pamela Mindell, artistic director for the WCC. The WCC will be represented by the choir’s most experienced members, who make up the organization’s two oldest ensembles.
Since its opening night in 1891, Carnegie Hall has housed countless historical icons in music and continues to serve as a hub for performing arts and entertainment. Young performers get to become a part of Carnegie’s history by stepping onto a stage and into spotlight that has been shared by some of the world’s greatest talent.
Throughout its history, Carnegie Hall is a place where young singers have worked alongside and learned from performers from all over the country. This will be the case for members of the WCC in June, as they will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight under the guidance of Mr. Nuñez. The children will work with the famous conductor during multiple days of rehearsals, culminating in a performance on Monday evening, June 26. Mr. Nuñez is a composer, conductor, and innovator in music education. “Francisco Nuñez is an energetic conductor who writes interesting and beautiful music,” Mindell remarked. She looks forward to her singers learning from Nuñez as well as from fellow performers by “spending time socializing outside of rehearsals.” The San Diego Children’s Choir as well as choirs from Winston-Salem, NC, and Virginia are just a few of the contingents that the WCC will be working with. “The WCC is proud to be featured at this event and looks forward to another successful performance at the stunning and historic venue of Carnegie Hall,” she added.
From 8th grade singer Marissa: “It’s amazing to be given the opportunity to have this experience. I feel very fortunate to be so young and be exposed to singing in places like Carnegie Hall. WCC is a great group of people. I had a blast in New Orleans last year and cannot wait to start the summer singing with my friends.”
From high school singer, Lauren Walsh: “I’m super excited to go on tour to Carnegie Hall this summer! It will be such a great opportunity to be able to connect with people from all over the country and to expand my horizons and further my journey with Worcester Children’s Chorus. I can’t wait!”
